Are you a CG fan?

So I’ve been in New York for the past couple of weeks and haven’t been able to update since I was sans laptop, but while I was away I got some crazy news from a friend that is a web editor at Hearst…
You’ve probably heard by now that CosmoGIRL Magazine has folded! I know it probably shouldn’t be surprising due to the faltering economy and the fact that so many other teen titles (ElleGirl and Teen People most notably) have made the “transition” from glossy to online destination recently, but CosmoGIRL seemed to be doing so well! For those that don’t know their circulation has been decent and they’ve won several awards for promoting healthy body images…
Having written my master’s thesis about third wave feminism in CosmoGIRL (geeky, I know) I have to say that I’m totally disappointed in the mag’s demise… CosmoGIRL stood out as one of the only teen mags to give consistent coverage to politics with their regular Project 2024 features and seemed to really try to encourage their readers to push the boundaries of possibilities – at least as much as they could being a corporate title. They did progressive pieces on everything from abortion to foreign policy to masturbation, offering a distinct alternative to the more conservative Seventeen and more fashion-obsessed Teen Vogue. True, CG! was not Bust, Bitch, or Ms. (nor did it claim to be a distinctively feminist title) but it offered substance with its style that alot of readers appreciated....
You can still get CG! goods on their website but they definitely left a gap in the magazine isle that will be hard to replace…
